Dueling is a confrontation between two or more wizards or witches. The combatants face each other, bow, and then attempt to disarm, injure, or kill each other in order to force submission, and thus a winner is decided. Opponents are only permitted to use magical means of combat.
At the Salem Witches' Institute dueling is conducted in the following manor:
1st Years are allowed--but not required--to take a beginner's dueling course where one learns the basics as taught to the student body since the Institute's founding.
Students are allowed to join a Coven Dueling Club in their 2nd Year, but only upon completion of the 1st Year dueling course. If a student who wishes to join a Coven Dueling Club has not passed, or taken, the 1st Year class, they will need to pass a supervised test--administered by the head of the Coven Dueling Club and myself--to gain admission.
Students are allow to be a member in good standing of a Coven Dueling Club during their 2rd Year through to the completion of their 6th Year. 7th Year students whom the Institute believes capable of more strenuous training will be invited to take part in private session that I personally teach. The only dueling clubs available for 7th year students who are not invited are informal ones that will not be allow to compete for the All Coven Dueling Cup.
Dueling at the Salem Witches' Institute is taken very seriously, and partaking in an unauthorized duel will lead to a punishment, depending on the circumstances, ranging from detention to banishment from a dueling club to expulsion from the Institute. Remember this before the wands come out and your actions force consequences you are unable to face.
