Pratice in the Astronomy Tower

The moment it was away from her wand Emma knew she had it. She saw Kerry jerk then shake his head and say, "Wuu hu huuul?" then hang his head when he realize he'd been taken out. He looked up, smiled, and shrugged, knowing there was nothing to do for another 15 minutes.

Emma couldn't help herself. She bounced up and down, clapping her hands. "Yah!!! I got you, Kerry!" She ran up to him and gave him a very playful look. "Cat got your tongue, Starbuck?" she asked playfully. She really wanted to rub it in, but then realized he'd never did that to her when he'd cranked off his spells, so Emma stopped, realizing how she much look to him.

"I'm sorry, Kerry," she said. "I just got carried away." She squinted up at him. "It's okay?" He nodded and smiled to show there were no hard feelings.

The fifteen minutes went by rather quickly, and Kerry couldn't help but remember the look on Emma's face when she finally got him. She was so damn excited-- And he probably looked the same way when he did what he did to her. Or did he? He didn't remember. Or didn't care. At least she didn't do that with Annie around--or to Annie. Kerry was visualizing the anti-falling charms doing their thing--

As soon as his mouth was working again he checked out Emma, who was sort of not really paying attention to him. She was just sort of leaning against some equipment, staring off into space. Well, she's in as good a position as any . . . Kerry raised his wand just in time to see Emma glance his way as he snapped it down hard and commanded, "Expelliarmus!"

Emma had been thinking about what she did, and how naughty it's been. Kerry's been very nice to me, even when he's been blinding and freezing me--and almost blowing me up. But Emma knew he'd never made fun of her after the fact, and she'd been wracked with a touch of guilt every since--

Although hearing his attack while she was learning was very nice! Oh, this sneaky guy! Not wanting to waste time, Emma thrust her wand out and barked, "Impedimenta!"

Kerry felt something move by him and that's when he decided this standing in the middle and getting punked is for assclowns! He ran laterally as he slashed the air with his wand in the direction of Emma. "Expelliarmus!"

Emma moved from where she had been leaning and tried to attack Kerry, but... he's running! What's he doing? Emma didn't know you could do this! It wasn't like she'd heard of anyone in real dueling doing this.

"Oh, darn!" She stepped forward and hoped she was going to hit with what she was throwing. "Impedimenta!" she cried.

The only thing that can be said, Sweet Emma, is that if someone is gonna blow you off your feet with Expelliarmus, getting wrapped up in Impedimenta might not be too bad.

It's still gonna hurt a little.

Unfortunately.

Kerry knew he'd hit Emma with his attack. What he didn't expect was the when she was hit she lifted about half a meter off the ground and was thrown backwards--

In slow motion.

It was like real-life bullet time. There was Emma, knocked back off her feet, but she was floating backward in slow motion, eyes wide open, her mouth sort of semi-frozen in a scream--which she started about 15 seconds in--her hair floating about in the air like she was Medusa.

Kerry walked over to her and watched, up close, while she shouted, "Kerry! What's happening?" He wasn't the only one watching: so was everyone else in the tower.

And then, just about when she'd traveled backwards about a meter, and she was almost parallel with the ground, the effect ended--

And she hit the floor with a Woof!

While Emma gasped for air, Kerry stood over her with a very puzzled look on his face. "Now . . . that's definitely something you don't see every day."

Emma picked herself up from the floor and ran her hands over her body, checking for damnage. Nothing broken, but she ached in a few spots, and she was sure she'd have bruises in the morning. More than anything Emma's ego was a little bruised, 'cause Kerry hit her on the fly, and . . . and I couldn't have done that.

Kerry had helped get her on her feet and he was no standing back like he expected something to happen. Emma still hand he wand in her hand, and since it would be a shame not to do something with it--

Up this close she knew she couldn't miss. She did a quick little jab and shouted, "Relashio!"

Not that Kerry knew anything was coming, but it seemed like this "spell practice" between Emma and him had turned into something along the lines of a "Who Could Sneak in the Attack First" contest. And he knew that she knew he was likely to whip off an attack at any more--just like he might do against a bad guy--

So Kerry was ready the moment Emma started to move her wand. As she cooked off her attack, Kerry set to block. He moved his wand in a quick, tight circle before him, but instead of saying "Wax on" he said, rather softly, "Protego".

Emma actually saw the shield come up for a second even though she did nothing. Then it faded away, and there was nothing but air between her and Kerry. She didn't want to admit it, but the spooky feeling she'd had about Kerry earlier--it was back.

He just brushed that way like it was nothin', Emma thought. That's just crazy.

She lowered her wand and put on a brave smile. "We should rest a little before we get back on our brooms," she said, a light stutter emerging from her voice. "I see a couple of empty chairs--" She raised both eyebrows. "Wanna join me?"

With that last spell Kerry was not only starting to freak Emma, he was freaking himself a little. He knew the last week had been pretty intense, what with transformations and potions and charms and dark arts--and flying, don't forget the flying--but it seemed like suddenly he was getting everything down so . . . pat.

It's not suppose to work like that, is it? He didn't know. It was all a huge learning experience, but the more he learned--about magic, and about what he could do with it--the more he wondered how it was that he was the only person in his family who could do this stuff.

Why? Why is it me?

He modded to Emma. "That sounds like fun." He picked up his gear and followed her over to the chairs where only last week he'd huddle under the blankets with Annie for the first time . . ..

It was an interesting dream. Annie and he, in the darkened room, nothing hearing much beyond the talk of other, them sitting still and not saying a lot, just casting glances around the room before focusing on the other.

And it all went away as Kerry was shook awake. He looked up and saw Emma standing over him. "Hey," he said, stretching.

"We gotta get up," she said. Her jacket was already on. "Break was for an hour, and there's another group on their way in."

Kerry stood and began getting into his gear. As he was shrugging into his jacket Emma asked, "Who's Conor?"

Doing his best not to miss a beat, Kerry asked, "Someone I knew. Why?"

"You said his name while you were sleeping. I heard it when I walked up." Emma looked around then stepped closer. "You mumbled, 'Conor should be okay'." Emma was watching Kerry closely. "You okay?"

Of course I'm okay, he thought. Just because I'm having dreams about something that happen to me a couple of weeks ago while it happening now--nothing strange there, right? "Totally awesome," he said, smiling as he shrugged this flying helmet on.

As they walked to where they'd secured their brooms Emma couldn't help but pass along more news. "Professor . . . Harpreet, she's using something--" She looked like she was having difficulty either understanding or passing along information. "--'magical shortwave', but anyway, she said she heard something about other attacks--"

"Where?" Kerry passed Emma her Cleansweep.

"Durmstrang: looks like they got an attack a while ago, maybe an hour." Emma hovered her broom before fastening her helmet. "And it looks like Pacific Cascades might have gotten an attack, too, but she's not sure." Pacific Cascades was a magical school like Salem located deep in the forests of Oregon; Kerry had read about it yesterday while looking up information on other schools.

"So what's it mean?" he asked. "We're next?"

Emma shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe." She mounted her broom. "I guess if I could see the future I'd know."

Kerry mounted the Nimbus and was airborne and clear of the Astronomy Tower within seconds, Emma right along said. As he called in to let Victoria he was airborne, he wondered if someone he know who could see the future knew what was coming next--
